Cycling from Machida to Enoshima: Lake Miyagase, Yabitsu Pass & Coastal Ride

Starting early from Machida, I headed to Karakida Station to meet up with the Half-Past Cycling group. From there, we cycled onward to Lake Miyagase, a scenic stop before taking on the challenges of Kanagawa Route 70, which leads up, over, and down Yabitsu Pass. Along the way, we stopped at a small t-shirt and snack shop with a well-placed vending machine—a humble but appreciated source of refreshments.

The Yabitsu Pass Adventure

Ascending Yabitsu Pass from the north side was a solid workout, rewarded by a breathtaking descent into Hadano. There, we paused for a satisfying break with Neapolitan pasta and coffee. After parting ways with the Half-Past cyclists, I continued south along a flat dual carriageway, which led to a fantastic downhill stretch at full speed all the way to Ninomiya on the coast.

Coastal Ride from Oiso to Enoshima

Turning left at Ninomiya, I followed the coastal road, enjoying the smooth tarmac past Oiso Long Beach and Southern Beach Chigasaki, eventually reaching Enoshima. A quick stop for a chicken and egg sandwich was the perfect fuel before heading back north along the Sakai River to Machida.

A Memorable Ride Worth Repeating

It was an incredible day despite the overcast sky, which held off on rain. Warm enough for summer cycling gear, I brought along a fleece vest that came in handy during coffee breaks and the fast downhill sections. Thanks to everyone who made it a fantastic ride!

Reflections on the Ride

One major difference from my earlier rides this summer: I’m carrying 15 kg less weight now, which translates into greater efficiency uphill and the ability to use a higher gear. While this may slightly slow me down on the downhills, the uphill sections feel noticeably smoother. I’ll definitely repeat this route soon to capture the experience on my Insta360, especially the thrilling downhill sections!

With rain expected over the next few days, I’ll take the opportunity to recover and plan the next adventure.
