LEGO Mindstorms in the Classroom

I run a LEGO Mindstorms club with my Grade 2 to Grade 4 students. This video isn’t a project we’ll be attempting any time soon, but it’s still a fascinating watch and a great example of what’s possible with advanced robotics and automation.

Although the price is high, so too is the value for money and long-term accessibility. Over the years I’ve evaluated many programmable construction kits for students, and LEGO consistently stands out as the most successful.

From a school perspective, replacement parts—while still expensive—are easy to obtain and extremely well built. With most other electronic kits, teachers need to spend significant time explaining how everything works, and student enthusiasm can fade after 30 minutes.

With LEGO, I can simply place a box in front of students and they immediately begin creating. That kind of intuitive, open-ended engagement is hard to beat.
