First Impressions: Insta360 Third Person Bike Tail Mount Review
Insta360 Third Person Bike Tail Mount – First Ride Review
The Insta360 Third Person Bike Tail Mount promises a cinematic, floating camera angle that follows the rider from behind. I tested it on my Bianchi Infinito to see how well it performs on real roads rather than smooth promotional setups.
This was my first ride using the tail-mounted setup, paired with an Insta360 camera. While the perspective is visually striking, real-world riding introduces a few practical challenges worth considering before committing to this mount.

Installation and Setup
The tail mount clamps directly to the seatpost and extends the camera well behind the bike. To avoid marking the post, I wrapped two layers of black vinyl tape before tightening the mount. Installation itself is straightforward and comparable to Insta360’s invisible handlebar mount.
Once fitted, the camera is highly visible from behind. This changes how you mount and dismount the bike and requires extra care when filtering through traffic or passing stationary vehicles.
On-Road Performance
Despite Japan’s generally smooth tarmac, the footage suffered from noticeable vertical bounce. Insta360’s stabilisation keeps the background smooth, but once the bike appears in frame the movement becomes distracting, particularly at speed.
The perspective is undeniably interesting, and the footage looks excellent when stationary or rolling slowly. However, for longer road rides the motion proved difficult to ignore.
Audio Experiment – Zoom H1n
I also tested external audio using a Zoom H1n mounted on the handlebars, hoping to capture drivetrain and wheel sounds. In practice, every road vibration translated into heavy low-frequency rumble, making the audio unusable while riding.
When stationary, the recorder performed beautifully. On future rides, I’ll experiment with clipping it to the back of my jersey for better isolation from road shock.

Final Thoughts
The Insta360 Third Person Bike Tail Mount is an exciting concept and produces a genuinely unique perspective. For now, it feels better suited to short cinematic clips or very smooth paths rather than everyday road riding.
With further refinement to stabilisation, this could become a standout accessory. Until then, I’ll continue relying primarily on front-mounted setups for most rides.
