The Great Wave – Cycling Edition (7-Layer Laser Cut Wall Art)

This unique version of our popular Great Wave artwork features a bold new twist: a cyclist on a road bike, riding through the iconic scene. Precision laser-cut from seven individually painted layers of MDF, this piece blends traditional Japanese art with modern cycling culture—making it a perfect gift for any bike-loving partner, especially when you're searching for something truly different.

  • Layers: 7 layers of 3mm MDF, precision laser cut and hand-assembled
  • Size: 240 mm x 240 mm x 50 mm (including all layers)
  • Finish: Painted and sealed for lasting durability
  • Display: Includes sawtooth hook for wall hanging and a rear stand for shelf or desk display

Each piece is made here in Kanagawa, Japan, using a professional-grade xTool S1 laser cutter. I hand-paint and assemble each layer myself to ensure high quality and attention to detail. The finished piece is both bold and elegant—a mix of iconic tradition and personal passion for cycling.

About the Artwork:

The wave is inspired by the world-famous woodblock print “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. First published in the early 1830s as part of his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series, the image shows a massive wave about to crash over small boats, with Mount Fuji visible in the background.

This scene was originally painted right here in Kanagawa—where I also live and create this artwork. You can even read more about the area on my Kanagawa cycling blog.

This version is perfect for cyclists, Japan art fans, or anyone looking for a cycling-themed gift that’s meaningful, handmade, and truly one of a kind.
