Best Buddies New York – 100-Mile Route in Wood

Best Buddies Challenge: New York – Now Available as a Custom Wooden Route Map

The Best Buddies Challenge: New York held its inaugural 100-mile charity ride on October 4, 2025. Starting along Central Park West, riders moved north through Manhattan before crossing the iconic George Washington Bridge and settling into the stunning flow of the Hudson River Valley. With the climb toward Bear Mountain, the quiet forest roads of Harriman State Park, and the elegant finish at Glenmere Mansion, the event quickly earned a reputation for being one of the most scenic new charity rides in the region.

To celebrate the route, I’ve turned this course into a handcrafted layered wooden map made here in Kanagawa, Japan.

A Young Event Already Making Waves

Although only in its first year, the Best Buddies Challenge: New York made an immediate impact. Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish helped lead the start, and riders of all levels joined the challenge. The blend of urban landmarks, river views, forest climbs, and open countryside made the course feel like a full tour of New York cycling in a single day.

Turning Your GPX File Into Layered Wood Art

Using a rider's GPX track, I convert the course into a multi-layer wooden map featuring:

  • Your exact GPX route recreated with precision
  • A blue water layer for rivers and coastline
  • A natural basswood layer engraved with minor roads and park areas
  • A grey-toned layer showing major roads and expressways
  • Your route line shown in bold orange
  • Micro-islands engraved when too small to cut
  • Optional personalised details such as name, ride date, distance, elevation gain, and moving time

Every GPX file tells its own story, and each map becomes a unique representation of the day.

A New York Route Worth Displaying

Whether you completed the 100 miles yourself or supported a rider, the course makes a striking piece of wall art. The transitions from city gridlines to river curves and mountain contours look especially good when translated into layered wood.
