Custom A2 Tokyo City Map | Imperial Palace to Haneda Airport
The Tokyo map that won First Prize in the xTool × Creema Design Competition 2026 was an A2 layered wooden city map. With every map I make, I set myself the goal of improving on the one I made before, so I was delighted to be asked to create another custom A2 Tokyo city map.
This map was a custom commission and differs from my standard Tokyo City Map.
Creating a Custom Map of Tokyo
For this commission, the customer wanted a different area of Tokyo from my standard map. The design extends north to include the Imperial Palace and south to Haneda Airport.
The mapping software I use also allowed me to include much more railway detail than in my earlier Tokyo maps. After seeing the level of detail I could achieve while designing my Shinjuku Station Railway Map, I was keen to bring the same approach to this larger city map.
Tokyo's Railways in Wood
Tokyo's railway network adds another level of detail to the finished map. Major railway corridors can be followed across the city, alongside the dense network of streets, rivers and waterways.
It is one of the things I particularly enjoy about making larger maps. At A2 size there is enough space to preserve details that would simply disappear on a smaller piece. You can see more examples of my Japanese railway and train maps, including a short video showing the detail in the Shinjuku Station map.
Mapping Haneda Airport
The detail around Tokyo Haneda Airport was another pleasant surprise. I was able to include runways, taxiways and airport buildings, giving the southern end of the map a completely different character from central Tokyo.
Having previously included platforms, railway lines, station buildings and bus terminals in my Shinjuku Station map, I would now love the opportunity to create a custom airport map too.
Personalising the Finished Map
My custom maps can include a personalised engraved message and small wooden location pins marking places that are special to you. Before I begin making the finished piece, I prepare a digital mock-up so you can see and approve the design.
If you have a city, neighbourhood, airport or other special place you would like turned into a map, you can request a free custom map mock-up before deciding whether to order.
