    Based on real-world geographic data, this detailed railway map captures the incredible complexity of Shinjuku Station, where more than 3.5 million passengers pass through each day. The artwork features the surrounding railway network, station buildings, roads, and the distinctive urban landscape that makes Shinjuku one of Tokyo's most recognisable districts.

    During a visit to Shinjuku in July 2026, I noticed that the adjacent bus terminal was undergoing redevelopment. The map reflects those temporary works, while the remainder of the artwork is based on contemporary geographic data.

    • Land Layer: Natural wood engraved with surrounding city blocks, building outlines, railway stations, and railway lines. The word SHINJUKU is precision cut through the wood, allowing the layers beneath to show through the lettering.
    • Road & Station Layer: Precision laser-cut roads, station buildings, and selected platforms, finished in grey.
    • Water Layer: Spray-painted blue to highlight the lakes and ponds within Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.
