Boston Marathon Map – Large Scale Layered Wall Art
Creating maps at A1 size opens up a completely different level of detail and presence on the wall. This latest Boston Marathon map was designed as a large statement piece, combining layered construction, engraved details, and bold route artwork into a framed display intended to celebrate a major running achievement.
The completed artwork shown here is presented in a black frame, helping the layered colors and route details stand out clearly from a distance while still rewarding closer inspection.
Built in Multiple Layers
Like my other marathon maps, this piece uses a layered construction approach:
- Blue water layer
- Grey road and city structure layer
- Orange marathon route layer
The layered design creates depth and separation across the city while keeping the route easy to follow visually.
At A1 size (50x70cm / 20" x 28") the roads, dock areas, and route have far more room to breathe compared to smaller editions. It gives the map a much stronger architectural feel and makes the route itself become part of the artwork rather than simply an overlay.
Custom Runner Details
The area under the main title can be personalised with:
- Runner name
- Event date
- Finish time
- Bib number
- Personal message
- Achievement text
These custom details help transform the piece from a general marathon map into a personal keepsake connected to a specific race day memory.
Finish Line Detail
Another close-up image highlights the finish line section of the map.
The orange route layer passes directly through the engraved finish marker, with a precision-cut finish flag pin added as a focal detail. Small elements like this become much more effective at A1 scale because there is enough physical space for the details to stand out naturally.
The route itself is laser cut and layered separately from the city beneath it, creating subtle shadows and texture across the surface.
Why A1 Size Matters
Most marathon maps online are printed posters. Producing a layered physical map at A1 size presents a very different challenge.
Larger maps require:
- Careful alignment across the entire artwork
- Strong framing support
- Consistent engraving quality
- Precise layer positioning
- Clean finishing across a much larger surface area
This project was also an opportunity to demonstrate that my workshop setup and production process can handle large-format custom map artwork successfully.
Designed for Display
At A1 size, the artwork becomes a true wall feature suitable for:
- Home offices
- Running studios
- Hallways
- Sports clubs
- Finishers’ displays
- Retirement or milestone gifts
The combination of the black frame, layered construction, and bright route color gives the map a bold appearance even from across the room.
For runners who have completed Boston, the route itself instantly becomes recognisable.
Handmade in Japan
Each map is designed and assembled by hand in Japan using precision laser-cut layers and custom finishing techniques developed specifically for these large map projects.
As I continue refining larger formats, I plan to expand further into additional A1 city maps, marathon editions, and custom endurance event artwork.
