Exploring Fleetwood’s Lifeboat Legacy

Fleetwood Lifeboat Station has protected the Lancashire coastline since 1859, making it one of the oldest operational RNLI stations in the UK. Its volunteer crew has launched countless rescues across the Irish Sea, supported by generations of local families.

Today the station operates the Shannon-class lifeboat “Kenneth James Pierpoint” (13-07), a modern 25-knot self-righting rescue craft built to face some of the harshest conditions in UK waters. This remarkable vessel inspired the creation of my new handcrafted wooden map artwork.

About the Artwork

Each Fleetwood Lifeboat Station Map is designed and handcrafted by Mr. Tim in Kanagawa, Japan. The layered map design captures the coastline with depth and accuracy:

• Deep blue water layer representing the Irish Sea
• Surf-blue shallows defining the coastal areas
• Engraved minor roads across the land layer
• Grey major-road layer for clarity and contrast
• Engraved Fleetwood Shannon-class lifeboat illustration
• Wooden magnifier marker pinpointing the lifeboat station

The map also visualises Fleetwood’s approximate operational coverage zone — halfway north toward Morecambe and halfway south toward Blackpool — offering a unique perspective on the area protected by the station’s crew.

Personalisation & Craftsmanship

Each wooden map can be personalised with names, dates, messages, or a dedication. Every piece is unique due to the natural variations in wood grain and finish.
