The World Marathon Majors: The Big Six Races Every Runner Dreams Of

For many runners, completing a marathon is a lifetime achievement. For others, the journey goes further — towards the World Marathon Majors, often known simply as the Big Six.

These six iconic races represent the most prestigious marathons in the world. Each has its own character, history, and challenge, and together they form one of endurance sport’s most meaningful long-term goals.

What are the World Marathon Majors?

The World Marathon Majors is a series of six internationally recognised marathon events created to celebrate excellence in road running and to encourage participation at every level — from elite athletes to everyday runners.

Completing all six races is a rare and deeply personal achievement. Many runners spend years, sometimes decades, working toward the full set.

The Big Six World Marathon Majors

  • Tokyo Marathon
  • Boston Marathon
  • London Marathon
  • Berlin Marathon
  • Chicago Marathon
  • New York City Marathon

Tokyo Marathon

The Tokyo Marathon is often the gateway into the Majors for international runners. Known for its fast, flat course and exceptional organisation, it weaves through the heart of Japan’s capital, passing modern landmarks and historic districts alike.

Boston Marathon

First run in 1897, the Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the United States and one of the most tradition-rich races in the world. From Hopkinton to Boylston Street, the course is legendary — particularly the Newton hills and Heartbreak Hill.

London Marathon

The London Marathon is famous for its electric crowd support and iconic landmarks, taking runners past Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, and the Thames before finishing near Buckingham Palace. It is one of the most watched and celebrated marathons globally.

The London Marathon map will be added to the collection soon, using the same layered wooden map format.

Berlin Marathon

The Berlin Marathon is synonymous with speed. Many world records have been set on its famously flat course, which finishes through the Brandenburg Gate — one of the most recognisable finishes in marathon running.

Chicago Marathon

The Chicago Marathon offers a fast, accessible course and exceptional crowd support. Its loop through the city’s diverse neighbourhoods makes it a favourite for first-time marathoners and experienced runners alike.

New York City Marathon

The New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world. Crossing all five boroughs, it is as much a cultural event as a sporting one — loud, demanding, and unforgettable.

Why runners collect all six

Completing the World Marathon Majors is about more than medals. It represents:

  • Years of training and commitment
  • Travel and shared experiences
  • Personal growth through challenge
  • A story worth preserving

Turning marathon routes into lasting art

At The Magic Crayons, each marathon route map is handcrafted from layered wood and created using official GPX route data. The orange route layer follows the real course, while engraved and cut layers show roads, water, and key locations.

Each map can be personalised with the runner’s name, finish time, bib number, event name and year, and a personal message or dedication.

Together, the maps form a meaningful way to document a runner’s journey — whether it’s a first marathon or the completion of all six majors.
