Honolulu Marathon Wooden Course Map – A New Ocean-Inspired Design
Honolulu Marathon Wooden Course Map – A New Marathon Artwork
I’ve just added a new marathon map to the collection: a handcrafted wooden course map of the Honolulu Marathon, one of the most iconic destination marathons in the world.
This piece builds directly on techniques first introduced in the Cambridge Half Marathon map, with refinements made specifically for coastal routes and large-scale city courses.
Tools & Materials Used
xTool S1 (20W Laser Cutter)
My main machine for these map projects — reliable, quiet, and large enough for A2 work. It arrived extremely well packaged and has been a pleasure to use.

xTool SafetyPro AP2 with Super Cyclone
I use the S1 indoors, so this 6-layer filter deals with the fumes effectively. Tip: be proactive with cleaning rather than waiting for it to become clogged and require attention.

Kanpe Hapio Water-Based Spray Paint
Dries evenly and fast. In most cases, only one coat of paint is needed.

3M Scotch Paint Masking Tape 2899
Available in several widths, but I’ve found 24 mm especially useful for masking paint areas on map layers and other workshop tasks.

All of the items above were purchased by me and are used in my own workshop.
A new approach to colouring the ocean
One of the defining features of the Honolulu course is its relationship with the coastline, so this map introduces a new two-tone water colouring technique.
- Coastal areas are finished in a lighter, foamy blue
- The colour gradually blends into a deeper ocean blue further offshore
- The wood grain remains visible through a thin, carefully applied coat
The result is a more natural sense of depth and movement, while still preserving the warmth and character of the wood.

Route clarity and layered detail
As with all of my marathon maps, clarity comes first. The Honolulu Marathon route is shown as a bold raised orange layer, making it instantly recognisable.
- The marathon route is cut and raised in orange
- Major and secondary roads are shown in grey for contrast
- Local streets and urban details are engraved into the base layer
- Coastal outlines and water features frame the course naturally
The layout is designed so that runners can trace their race at a glance, while still enjoying the city context.

Engraved place-name strips
Following feedback on the Cambridge Half Marathon map, this design also uses separate engraved wooden name strips for place names.
These raised labels help identify key areas along the course without overcrowding the map surface, and can be adapted depending on scale and layout.
