Kyoto City Map – Handcrafted Wooden Wall Art

This handcrafted wooden map presents Kyoto as a city shaped by history, landscape, and movement. Using a layered design inspired by traditional cartography, the map focuses on the structure of the city itself — its streets, rivers, terrain, and cultural landmarks — without highlighting a specific event or route.

A city shaped by water, terrain, and tradition

Kyoto sits between low mountains and river systems that have influenced its development for centuries. This map reflects that relationship through carefully layered wood, allowing the city’s geography and urban form to read clearly and calmly as a single composition.

Layered wooden map design

  • Road network layer – primary streets and incoming expressways give structure and orientation while keeping the overall design uncluttered.
  • Water layer (sprayed blue gradient) – rivers flowing through the city are hand-sprayed in a gradient from deep blue to lighter, foamy blue.
  • Terrain contours (engraved) – subtle engraved contour lines show the hills that flank Kyoto, adding depth and geographic context.

Temples, shrines, and landmarks

Engraved wooden landmark tags (approximately 1–2 cm) are included to highlight many of Kyoto’s most recognisable sites. Each tag features a simplified architectural illustration with its name engraved beneath, helping visitors understand how these places are distributed across the city.

Landmarks include well-known sites such as Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion), Kiyomizu-dera, Yasaka Shrine, Nijō Castle, and Heian Shrine, along with Kyoto Tower near Kyoto Station as a modern reference point.
