This detailed artwork captures Kyoto’s distinctive combination of streets, rivers, surrounding hills, temples, shrines and historic landmarks using layers of precision laser-cut and engraved natural wood.
Layered Wooden Map Design
- Road network layer – primary streets and major routes give structure to the city while keeping the design clean and uncluttered.
- Water layer – Kyoto’s rivers and waterways are finished in blue to contrast with the natural wood.
- Terrain contours – subtle engraved contour lines show the hills surrounding Kyoto and add geographic depth.
- Landmark details – individual engraved wooden pieces highlight many of Kyoto’s best-known temples, shrines and landmarks.
Temples, Shrines & Landmarks
One of the distinctive features of this Kyoto map is its collection of small engraved wooden landmark pieces. Each features a simplified architectural illustration with the landmark name engraved beneath.
Featured locations include Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion), Kiyomizu-dera, Yasaka Shrine, Nijō Castle, Heian Shrine, and Kyoto Tower near Kyoto Station.
