This artwork is made to order.

Each piece is carefully handcrafted in a workshop in Kanagawa, Japan, as a layered wooden map of Kyoto.

Using precision laser cutting, the intricate road network, rivers, urban structure, and surrounding mountain terrain of Kyoto are delicately recreated. The piece is then hand-sanded and painted to add a softness, warmth, and depth that cannot be achieved through machine processing alone.

The artwork is constructed using multiple layered elements:

  • Water layer (sprayed blue gradient) – Rivers flowing through Kyoto are painted by hand using a sprayed gradient that shifts from deep blue to a lighter, foamy blue.

  • Terrain contours (engraved) – Subtle engraved contour lines show the hills that flank the city, adding depth without visual clutter.

  • Road network layer – Primary streets and incoming expressways provide scale and context while keeping the map calm and readable.

  • Cultural landmarks – Select temples, shrines, and historic attractions are marked throughout the city, adding identity and a strong sense of place.

The map includes iconic locations such as Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion), and Kiyomizu-dera. These landmarks help define Kyoto’s unique atmosphere and distinguish the city from anywhere else in Japan.

This map is designed to work as elegant Kyoto wall art — it reads as a calm, architectural interpretation of the city while still preserving the character and complexity of the urban landscape.

Even when using the same Kyoto map design, the natural wood grain and colour vary from piece to piece. The subtle nuances in paint and finish also differ slightly, meaning that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.
Each one is truly unique.

The Meaning Behind the Artwork

I believe maps are more than just information — they are symbols of memories, experiences, and time spent in a place.
This piece was created to preserve the atmosphere, culture, and personal stories connected to Kyoto through the shape of the city itself.

It also makes a meaningful gift for travellers, overseas visitors, housewarmings, office openings, or anyone who loves Kyoto and Japanese culture.
The clean and modern design fits naturally into offices, studies, and living spaces.

Handcrafted in Japan

Each map is designed, cut, engraved, painted, and assembled by hand in Japan. Natural variations in wood grain and hand-sprayed water layers ensure that every piece is unique. Maps are made to order with care and attention to detail.

Care Instructions

Please avoid displaying the artwork in direct sunlight or high-humidity environments.
Because natural wood is used, slight changes may occur over time due to temperature and humidity.
Clean gently using a soft dry cloth.

A three-dimensional representation of the historic city of Kyoto, expressed through layered wood.
A way to preserve everyday scenery and personal memories in a lasting form.
