Custom Lifeboat Station Coverage Map

Celebrate Britain’s lifeboat heritage with a custom-made Lifeboat Station Coverage Map, designed and handcrafted in Kanagawa, Japan by Mr Tim. Each map is created to order and focuses on one lifeboat station of your choice, showing both the station’s location and its approximate operational coverage area along the coast and at sea.

These maps are designed as thoughtful, place-based artworks — often chosen as meaningful gifts, retirement pieces, or personal tributes to a local station and coastline.

Coverage Area

Each map visualises the station’s approximate coverage zone, typically extending:

• Halfway toward neighbouring lifeboat stations along the coast
• Out to sea, reflecting the area commonly protected by that station’s crews

This wider view allows for rich coastal detail, including headlands and bays, coastal paths, harbours and marinas, cliffs, beaches, and shoreline features. Coverage is interpreted carefully and respectfully, based on publicly available geography and lifeboat station positioning.

Design & Layers

• Sea layers: Deep blue tones represent offshore waters, blending into lighter surf blues along the shoreline for depth and movement.
• Land & roads: Land areas are engraved with minor roads, with major roads added as a separate layer for clarity.
• Station focus: The lifeboat station or boathouse is subtly highlighted to draw the eye without overpowering the map.
• Coastal character: Each map balances accuracy with visual calm — suitable for home, office, or onboard display.

Layered Lifeboat Detail

Each map includes a separate two-layer wooden cut-out of the lifeboat stationed at the selected station. This detailed element measures approximately 10 cm × 6 cm (size varies slightly depending on vessel) and adds an extra focal point and sense of scale to the artwork.

The class of lifeboat is engraved beneath the model, providing an informative and respectful detail — similar in spirit to the medal element used in my marathon maps. This feature adds depth, character, and collectable value to the piece.

Personalisation

Each map can be personalised with engraved text, such as:

• Lifeboat station name
• Location or coastline name
• A short dedication or thank-you message
• Dates, service details, or a retirement note

If the station is new to my collection, you’ll receive a digital visual preview for approval before production begins.

Craftsmanship

Each piece is handmade from natural wood. Grain, tone, and texture naturally vary, making every map unique. Sea colours are carefully sprayed by hand, creating subtle variation and depth that cannot be replicated by printing.
