How to address student squeeling or tattling
Don’t Squeal Unless It’s a Big Deal
This is one of my go-to picture books for addressing classroom behaviour in a calm, constructive way — especially when students are struggling to understand the difference between tattling and reporting something genuinely important.
Set in a familiar classroom environment, the story follows a group of students who are constantly “squealing” on one another. Rather than responding with punishment, the teacher models a thoughtful approach — acknowledging feelings, encouraging problem-solving, and helping students decide when adult help is truly needed.
The language is accessible for young learners, and the message is clear without being preachy. It opens the door to excellent follow-up discussions about fairness, responsibility, and handling minor conflicts independently.
I’ve found this book especially effective in early primary classrooms where students are still developing emotional regulation and social problem-solving skills.
